Five employees of aviation company Skyservice Business Aviation in Dorval have
pleaded not guilty in a case Montreal police criminal investigators say involved
theft, criminal mischief and a fraud of over $7 million.
Under surveillance and investigation for two years, the five were arrested on
May 29 and charged with, among other accusations, stealing data from their
former employer, Innotech Execaire Aviation Group, a division of Halifax-based
IMP Group.
Dominique Verret, commander of the criminal investigations unit for western
Montreal, said that the case began in April 2010, when Innotech Execaire filed a
complaint accusing Gary Smith and three of his co-workers, Marc-André
Beauchemin, Joseph Wallace Gallant and Christian Brien, of stealing proprietary
information after the four left Innotech on a Friday and started work at
Skyservice the following Monday
A fourth accused, Paul-Andrew Weeks, is alleged to have been their contact at
Skyservice.
Innotech and Skyservice are neighbours on Ryan Ave. in Dorval and provide
many of the same services – air charter, maintenance for privately owned
aircraft and managing services such as pilots, flight attendants and lounges for
the jet set.
Verret said that while employed by Innotech Execaire, Smith had developed a
NDT (non-destructive testing) system for private jets that allows maintenance
firms to analyze and carry out repairs more efficiently.
"This technology belonged to Innotech Execaire," said Verret.
