Getting to Know AcousticEye - An Interview with Dr. Daniel Bobrow
Posted: 2013-1-24
With a Ph.D. in Materials Science and fluent in several languages, Dr. Daniel
Bobrow has a solid technical background, including a post as VP Quality
Assurance at Ormat, together with a unique perspective and distinctive
personality for conducting AcousticEye's business in Latin America.
What is your background and how did you become part of the AcousticEye team?
I started my career in the aerospace industry in various roles in the quality
assurance and failure analysis field for jet engines and UAVs (Unmanned Air
Vehicles). During those years, I also managed to graduate in Aeronautics
Engineering and Materials Science then do my Ph.D. in Materials Science.
From the aerospace industry, I moved to the electronics industry and from there
to the geothermal power plant company, Ormat. As the Vice President of Quality
Assurance in Ormat in 2008, I took part in a NDT conference and heard a very
interesting lecture on a new device that inspects tubes using Acoustic Pulse
Reflectometry (APR) technology.
The company behind it was, of course, AcousticEye. I was fascinated by the
option to inspect tubes so quickly and easily. I recognized right away the added
value of the AcousticEye device and how it could save Ormat a lot of time and
money in production and maintenance. After a successful demo in one of
Ormat’s geothermal stations in the U.S., Ormat became one of AcousticEye’s first
customers. It was very natural for me to move from being an enthusiastic
customer who truly believed in AcousticEye’s technology and people to the
position of AcousticEye’s Business Manager in Ibero-America, mainly in Latin
America. The fact that I can speak Spanish and have a great interest in Spanish-
speaking cultures also made the decision quite easy for me.
How would you describe your activities for AcousticEye in Latin America?
Since I joined AcousticEye, I have been managing the whole Ibero-American
region. I am the main focal point for sales, marketing and customer support. In
general, you can say I cover all the aspects of promoting AcousticEye technology
in those areas. This includes finding and supporting our local agents and
partners, participating in conferences, doing demos and presentations for
inspection service providers and end users. It also means centralizing the
customer support service to make sure we can respond properly to our clients.
How do you think AcousticEye’s solution can contribute to the Latin America NDT
market?
The penetration of a new technology is a process that takes a lot of effort and
time, especially in proving its value to the end customer. We have made quite a
lot of progress in the last few years in building relationships with leading
companies in the market and making initial sales of our Dolphin G3™ inspection
system.
We are starting to see the results of all the hard work and I feel that 2013 will be
an even better year for us. One of the nice examples of our technology being
adopted by the industry is that a leading Oil& Gas company in the region has
recently issued a bid requiring APR inspection for their next refinery turnaround.
How do you see AcousticEye’s Growth Potential in the Latin America NDT market
in 2013?
The Latin America region is geographically widespread with a lot of states and
bureaucracy in comparison to other regions. Together with those challenges;
however, Latin America has many business opportunities, including the NDT
market which is important for AcousticEye. Our main activity concentrates in
Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil which have large industries that are important for
our technology, such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, pulp and paper, mining, etc.
AcousticEye’s solution is very attractive in this region because it is less
dependent on highly trained experts as compared with traditional inspection
technologies. I believe there is great potential for AcousticEye in this market in
2013 and beyond.
After having accompanied AcousticEye from its first steps, how do you visualize
it in the future?
I believe that one thing leads to another. The solid work we are doing to build
relationships and gain the acceptance of our technology in the market, together
with further advancements by our R&D team to improve our value proposition,
will eventually make AcousticEye as one of the leading tube inspection
technology suppliers in the market. I think we have a very bright future indeed!
