Joshua Elliott (Non-Destructive Evaluation group) has been awarded an industrial fellowship by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

Joshua is one of fourteen young engineers and researchers chosen to receive up to £80,000 to help commercialise their research. His work with Rolls Royce plc and Imperial College London focuses on "Super resolution ultrasonic imaging for inspection of defects on safety critical components for naval programmes". Joshua explains:

"Current conventional ultrasonic NDE methods are often conservative in their approach, inevitably leading to unnecessary expenditure following routine component inspections. SR (super resolution) ultrasonic imaging has the potential to characterise successfully smaller defects than ever before, which would add extra confidence to inspections results, leading to both safety improvements and possible cost savings. Focus will also be placed on investigating low frequency SR imaging to compensate for image degradation caused by undesirable material properties that exist in some components. Low frequency SR could possibly increase the applicability of cheap ultrasonic NDE in lieu of expensive radiography.

The fellowship means I will be able to be procure and analyse purpose built test pieces for my project that would otherwise be unavailable. It will also provide the opportunity for me to present my research at many conferences as well as travel to specialist research centres, both facilitating the review of my research by industrial experts and helping to guide its progression."

Set up by Prince Albert in the wake of the Great Exhibition that took place in London in 1851, the Commission supports emerging technologies and the people behind them.
