Thesis Tribology of Self-lubricating SU-8 Composites
Description SU-8 is an industrially useful photoresist
polymer for micro-fabrication because of its unique UV-
sensitive curing property. It is also used as a structural
material for micro-machines such as micro-electro mechanical
systems (MEMS). However, it has poor tribological and
mechanical properties which make SU-8 inferior to Si, the
mainstay MEMS material today. Hence, we developed a new
self-lubricating SU-8 composite by blending the liquid
lubricant perfluoropolyether (PFPE) into SU-8. These self-
lubricating SU-8 composites have shown a reduction in the
initial coefficient of friction by ~6-9 times and increased
wear life by more than five orders of magnitude (>105). SU-8
composites can be used as a self-lubricating structural
material for MEMS applications requiring no external
lubrication.

Comments
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am Prabakaran Saravanan, currently pursuing my
PhD from National University of Singapore, Singapore, which
is scheduled to finish by December, 2014. I am working on a
thesis titled, “Tribology of Self-lubricating SU-8
composites for MEMS Applications". The thesis is about the
development perflouropolyether (PFPE) lubricant droplet
filled SU-8 composite which exhibited dramatic improvement
in tribology of SU-8 by increasing its wear life more than
10^5 times. We have also investigated the chemical and
physical mechanism responsible for this drastic improvement.
My PhD research has also provided me adequate experience on
thin film fabrication through spin-coating, Photo-
lithography process, Micro-fabrication, XPS
characterization, FESEM imaging, AFM imaging, FTIR analysis,
Micro and Nano Tribological characterization, Tribometer
design and development, Surface energy analysis, CVD process
and composite preparation.

I also have done tremendous amount of literature review and
journal paper reading on hard-disk lubrication, since I am
closely working with magnetic disk lubricant
perflouropolyether (PFPE).

Below are the summary of my research accomplishments:

 One my work published in “Tribology Letters”
was
recognized for STLE Magazine: Tribology & Lubrication
Technology’s cutting edge column.
 Recipient of TTRF Young Tribologist Award.
 Authored more than four tribology journal
papers.
 Filed a US patent on “SU-8 composites”,
Application
No: 13/683467, Patent No: 20130130951.

I hope that my experience and knowledge meets your
requirement. Hence, I am submitting my Curriculum Vitae and
list of referees along with this cover letter for your
appraisal and would be pleased to send you any further
information that you may require.
I do hereby declare that all the details furnished above are
true to the best of my knowledge.

Sincerely,

Prabakaran Saravanan
