The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration is recruiting for a Metals & Coatings Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) in the Office of Materials Technology (Anne Arundel County). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications* listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy, and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification in the Office of Materials Technology (Anne Arundel County).

This position is in the Office of Materials Technology's (OMT) Structural Materials and Pavement Marking Division (SMPMD) in Hanover, Maryland. This position serves as a Metals & Coatings Engineer and will be expected to conduct work independently with minimal guidance from the Metals and Coatings Team Leader.

This is an intermediate level transportation engineer position with experience in quality control/quality assurance in the fields of metals, welding, non-destructive testing, structural steel fabrication, coatings and erection. This position is responsible for the inspections of Structural Steel Fabrication Facilities, within Maryland and Nationwide. This position will perform routine and sophisticated non-destructive testing of in-service structural steel components in the field. This position reviews plans and specifications for new construction, rehabilitation or improvements to ensure compliance with standards and regulations. The Metals & Coatings Engineer will work with architects, engineers and contractors to ensure adherence to proper standards and codes. The Metals & Coatings Engineer will prepare daily reports of inspections preformed.
Skills:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in professional engineering.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATION: One (1) year of experience must include work in steel bridge fabrication or multi-level commercial/industrial steel structures; or one (1) year of experience involving work related to quality control/quality assurance involving welding.

Notes:
1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2. Possession of a Master's Degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:The ideal candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills. Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Have a Level II Non-Destructive certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Coatings, NACE Level CIPI/CIPII/CIPIII or SSPC PCI or PCII. Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Licenses & Certifications
Employees will be required by the appointing authority to successfully complete the Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires some overnight travel and will be required to be on-call for responses to various emergencies involving damage to structural sign and/or bridge structures. The incumbent must be able to travel statewide and nationwide. Be available for overnight stays, two (2) to three (3) times per month. Must be able to climb steel structures.
