Hello, I am a 15 year construction laboratory manager veteran looking to move into NDT. My wife recently graduated nursing school and got a great job which is allowing me to go back to school so instead of pursue a totally new career I have decided to go back to school. I live in Tulsa, OK and there are 2 NDT schools in the area, Spartan College of Aeronautics and Tulsa Welding School. I am interested in hearing back from anyone that has gone to Spartan and what they think about the school. It is extremely expensive (24k/year) and I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision to go there. It is 1 year long and teach all 5 NDT methods. According to them they qualify you to be able to reach Level II certification minus the actual work experience requirement. Another question I have is are there jobs out there for recent grads? I have 15 years experience as an inspector but its mostly rebar, concrete, asphalt, soils inspections. Some anchor bolts and rebar bend and pull testing as well but no NDT experience. I really don't want to spend the money and backtrack my career, I make around 40k now and looking to make more. I do have a wife and kid though so I cannot move or travel all the time either. Thanks for any advise.

Subject: ASNT Level III

Hello, First of all I personally know two graduates from Spartan. Both have done very well in the NDT field. They each have very different careers. One is a project manager at Consulting firm. The other is a consultant. There are many directions you can head in NDT. I started out working for an Inspection company, where I obtained my certifications. I finally reached ASNT NDT Level III status by taking exams given by ASNT. I now own Apex NDT Training Services. Our school offers courses for certification, minus the experience hours as well. We offer certification in two methods. Magnetic Particle and Ultrasonic Testing. These are the two most common methods as far those seeking jobs. The total cost for the courses is about $3,000 and will take up about three weeks of your time. I have had all former students get hired the next week after completing the course. The average pay for entry level NDT Technicians is around $40,000-50,000 for the first year and can easily double from there in a matter of two to three years. I hope that you would consider our school for training. Our certificates meet the same ASNT SNT-TC-1A requirements as Spartan. I hope this information helps you and I wish you all the best in seeking a career that will benefit you most in the future. Regards, Gilbert T. ASNT NDT Level III
