I’m a Senior NDT Test Examiner at Newport News Shipbuilding (Northrop Grumman). Could someone point me in the right direction of where I might find a mold showing weld roughness? In my MIL-STD-250-1500-1 world, the roughest the weld can be for VT/MT/PT is 1000 Ra (roughness average). We’ve had a 1000 Ra sample for decades, but we have no documentation of who checked it or how it was checked. The sample we use now is a 3” L x 3” W (weld is 1-1/2” wide) flat plastic mold of a butt weld welded with 6010. Some tee-welds and pipe butts would be more representative of what we deal with on a daily basis. What is used in AWS, etc. for visually inspecting the weld roughness attribute? If someone could help me, I would be deeply appreciative. Thanks. Rick Humphries NDT Test Examiner QID Bldg. 134 Phone: 757-688-5438 Fax: 757-688-1034 / Pager 888-7629 humphries_mr@nns.com

I suggest you visit www.flawtech.com and contact them to see if they have done anything like before. They manufacture flaw samples for a number of industries and might be able to lead you to the answer.
