Subject: UT Certification

Generally speaking, you can be certified for anything that you want as detailed in your written practice. SNT-TC-1A states that "In developing a written practice as required in Section 5, the employer should review the detailed recommendations presented herein and modify them, as necessary, to meet particular needs." So, your employer can decide to train and certify you to perform only UT thickness gauging. The final acceptance of your program however, lies with your clients. If it is their opinion that you can not do UT thickness testing without knowing shear wave then you have to know shear wave.
