Balancing maintenance costs and reliability

Under the patronage of KNPC, IQPC is pleased to organise the 3rd Annual Maintenance Kuwait Summit taking place from 5-8 February 2017 in Kuwait to address the critical maintenance challenges in the oil, gas and petrochemical industry and help focus on low-cost solutions needed to improve the overall reliability and resilience of the industry.

Kuwait is all set to be the region’s next downstream hub with almost $30 billion worth of mega projects including the Al Zour Refinery, the integrated petrochemical complex and the LNG receiving terminal to go fully operational in the next few years. At the same time, with over 500 wells to be drilled in North Kuwait around the Fars heavy oil field and the Jurassic production centres in progress, the upstream investments in Kuwait are also expected to be completed in the next few years. These massive projects will help Kuwait achieve a daily refining output of 936,000 bpd and over 3.5 million bpd of crude oil production. Sustaining these projects in the longer run will require a robust maintenance strategy and its successful implementation.

Apart from developing a maintenance philosophy for its new projects, Kuwait is also in the process of improving the maintenance resilience for its legacy assets including the exisiting refineries as well as the oldest oil field in the world. Balancing between the need to create a new maintenance philosophy and the need to improve the existing maintenance resilience would require a thorough collaboration between the operators and solution providers. This collaboration would need to achieve the objectives of improving shelf life of current assets, online monitoring and inspecting critical equipment with the sole intent of avoiding emergency shutdowns and at the same time ensuring a supply of auxiliary and spare parts to improve operational efficiency.
