WELDING ENGINEER

SpaceX is leading the aerospace industry in developing a new generation of launch vehicles and spacecraft. Our mission is to further human space exploration by increasing the reliability and reducing the cost of space travel, ultimately by a factor of ten.

We have already made history with our Falcon 1 launch vehicle, the first privately-developed liquid fuel rocket to orbit the Earth. The next major goal for SpaceX: launching our much larger Falcon 9 vehicle from Cape Canaveral in 2009.

Our rapid growth has created an opportunity for an additional Welding Engineer to support the production of our Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 launch vehicles and our Dragon spacecraft.

SpaceX is seeking an experienced welding engineer with extensive experience on an aerospace or other high precision and/or mission critical program. SpaceX builds almost all of the structural components of our launch vehicles and spacecraft in house. We are a vertically integrated company utilizing several advanced welding techniques/systems for various structural assemblies for spaceflight. Our welded assemblies range from bench top size to over 80 feet long and 12 feet in diameter. This is an exciting, challenging and rewarding position for the right senior weld engineer.

Responsibilities:

•Develop weld processes/parameters for various weld processes including GTAW, VPPA, and Friction Stir Welding
•Set up welding qualification tests and interpret the results including inspecting weld samples and/or working with non-destructive test (NDT) personnel to interpret weld quality
•Resolve production issues related to joining processes
•Provide direction to welding technicians during production and test welding runs as necessary
Skills:
Requirements:

•The applicant must have at minimum 5 years weld engineering experience or have a B.S. level degree from a welding/metallurgy centric program.
•Strong preference for extensive experience with aluminum GTAW, VPPA and Friction Stir Welding processes
•This position requires a flexible hands-on weld engineer who has the range and desire to not only work on process and materials engineering issues but is also open to and used to working in a production environment and working side-by-side with welding technicians.
•As this position is sometimes very hands-on, it requires physical exertion; the successful candidate should be able to bend, left, climb, and work in confined spaces as needed to assist in welding processes.
•To conform to Government space technology export regulations, SpaceX hires only U.S. citizens and permanent residents (Green Card holders).
