GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Senior Machinist for the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Warrenville, IL supports patient care by manufacturing acrylic and brass devices to be used in patient treatment. The machinist must be capable of performing complex machining processes, which include editing and writing your own machine programs and producing prototype or experimental products for the Physics department. The Senior Machinist also monitors and coordinates all jobs sent outside of the center including patient devices manufacture, raw stock replenishment, brass and acrylic blank manufacture/resupply, and special requests as made by internal customers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of machine tools which may include numerical control/computerized numeric control lathes, mills, drills, computerized numerical control/numerical control and/or manual machines and other equipment
• Must edit and write their own program, sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of machine tools which include numerical control/computerized numeric control lathes, mills, drills, computerized numerical control/numerical control and/or manual machines and other equipment
• May be required to read blueprints, perform varying levels of shop mathematics associated with machining operations, and perform inspection procedures to verify work
• May use a wide range of measurement devices, procedures, and machining techniques, and program machines as required
• Must be able to work under little supervision
• Responsible for fabricating new parts, for facility machinery. Assist in the installation, and maintenance of facility machinery. Assists with receipt, storage and inventory of stock supply within the facility. Performs equipment calibration / testing when assigned. Performs quality checks on all fabricated parts. Works with facility electronic scheduling system and checklist to track work orders and completion. Tends CNC machines, cutoff saws, shears, presses, and punch, that cut and shape, metal and Lucite stock materials. Reads blueprint order or electronic order specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
• Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template.
• Positions work piece against stops, manually or using hoist, or aligns layout marks with die or blade.
• Observes machine operation to detect work piece defects or machine malfunction.
• Measures work piece dimensions, using rule, template, or other measuring instruments to determine accuracy of machine operation.
• Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from work piece, using file, hand grinder, or wire brush.
• Performs minor machine maintenance, such as oiling machines, dies, or work pieces and maintenance of CNC cooling system.
• Assists machine operators to set up machine, and stack, mark, pack, and transport finished work pieces.
• Responsible for packaging, loading and recycling of spent plastic, metals and CNC machine cooling waste.
• May rivet work pieces. Performs highly diverse and complex contour milling, drilling, boring, tapping or machining of products either manually or computer controls.
• Coordinates manufacturing of machined parts with outside suppliers as needed.
• Develop, maintain and coordinate quality assurance plan with Physics and Manager, Quality Assurance
• Also performs progressive machining operations for apparatus or equipment with close tolerances.
• Fits and assembles where necessary.
• Assists in debugging operating problems on pilot or first run jobs.
• Fabricate replacement and new parts for facility machinery
• Fabricate, erect, install, and maintain facility machinery
• Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on facility machinery
• Troubleshoot and repair facility machinery.
• Write and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Safety Analysis (JSAs).
• Program PLCs.
• Complete daily maintenance and repair logs.
• Communicate with operators from other shifts.
• Maintain and secure work tools
• Clean and maintain work area. Turn off and lock out equipment when not in use.
• Provide on-the-job training to new employees.
• Following company procedures for procurement, order tools and fabrication parts as required.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• 4-6 years related machining experience
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Must be capable of performing complex machining processes, which may include prototype products
• Must have knowledge of hard and exotic metals and transforming them into round and threaded objects
• CNC/ PLC programming certification or equivalent experience.
• Experience using one or more of the following tools: lathe, drill press, and vertical/horizontal cut off saw, belt sander, hand tools.
• Ability to read, interpret, blueprints and schematics.
• Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
• Computer skills should include ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Excel.
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds required.
• Ability to reach 5 feet above the floor.
• Ability to stand for the majority of shift.
• Keyboard / mouse dexterity.
• Good vision and hearing.
EDUCATION/DEGREE
• High school degree required

• Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves frequent lifting of materials up to 30 pounds. Machinery and tool operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted. Long hair must be pulled back and contained with net or hat. All treatment center employees are required to wear an identification badge and facility radiation badge.
• Job requires flexibility in schedule to cover emergency job orders for critical patient treatments. This may require working late or arriving early for shift, as instructed by manager.
• ProCure utilizes RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) tags at the centers for the purposes of analysis of productivity and patient throughput. This information is not for use as a management tool for employee performance issues.
