An opening exists for an NDI technologist to work with aircraft equipment manufacturers, airlines, NDI equipment developers, and the FAA Airworthiness Assurance Center of Excellence members to plan, implement and report on airworthiness assurance projects. Assignments will include performing inspections using nondestructive testing (NDT) equipment, operating mechanical test equipment, implementing instrumentation and data acquisition schemes, and supporting experiments through test specimen and fixture design. Activities also include oversight on projects and reporting. The job requires knowledge of PC design graphics, spreadsheet, data acquisition, and data analysis packages. Candidate must work independently on multiple assignments while adhering to tight schedules. Previous aircraft inspection experience is preferred. Knowledge of PC platforms and basic office software packages is desirable.
This position supports the Sandia National Labs Airworthiness Assurance Center in the areas of aircraft inspection validation, aircraft field experiments, and structural mechanics tests. The department serves the needs of the Federal Aviation Administration, Dept. of Defense, Dept of Transportation, and other private industry customers in developing and validating advanced aircraft maintenance, inspection, and repair technology. Project teams normally consist of aviation industry partners such as Boeing or American Airlines and possibly university or private industry engineers.
The Primary Responsibilities include: 1) performing inspections using NDT equipment (ultrasonics, eddy current); ASNT Level II or III certification in ultrasonics is desirable, 2) designing and setting up test assemblies for NDT and structural tests (sensors, wiring, data acquisition equipment), 3) conducting field tests at aircraft maintenance depots, 4) interfacing with customers in aviation industry.
