Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has
been retained to conduct the search for a new Chief
Technology Officer (CTO) for the American Society for
Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), the world’s largest
nonprofit international technical society for
nondestructive testing. This full-time, onsite position
is for immediate hire and is based in the Society’s
headquarter offices in Columbus, Ohio.

Position Summary:
The Chief Technology Officer works closely with the
Executive Director and works collaboratively with the
Senior Management Team. This influential role oversees
department management and provides informed, strategic
guidance for mission driven program growth within the
global marketplace.

This newly created role is also responsible for driving
partnership development and enhancing relationships with
nondestructive testing (NDT) societies, organizations,
and regulatory bodies (for codes and standards). In
addition to creating engagement globally and
understanding the need for acute political sensitivity,
this role also demands adaptability and the ability to
influence development and growth opportunities for ASNT’s
products internationally.

To accomplish the objectives of this role, the CTO will
effectively supervise a growing department that is
comprised of two NDT certification program focused staff
members (one currently is a specialist/expert in
technology and certification, the other is focused on
quality management), as well as three additional highly
effective department support staff.

This exciting position is full time, based onsite in
Columbus, Ohio and will require the ability to travel
domestically and internationally up to approximately 33%
of the time.

Responsibilities:
• Oversees management of design, implementation,
and the strategy, and growth process for all ASNT
certification/training/educational programs.
• Cultivates existing partner relationships under
the direction of the Executive Director and assists in
the development of strategic initiatives to optimize
organizational relationships, enhance programs, and build
partnerships.
• Persuasively constructs alliances between ASNT
and technical societies and organizations that offer NDT
certification programs as well as the regulatory bodies
that influence NDT policies.
• Monitors NDT technical, certification and
training trends globally, assesses information and
advises the Executive Director and Senior Management Team
on potential/existing issues as well as identified
opportunities for development.
• Supports the Executive Director and collaborates
with Senior Management Team and/or volunteer Board
members and Councils on strategy to create optimal
positioning for all ASNT products, programs, and
services.
• Champions the development and implementation of
new ASNT certification policies, initiatives, and
programs; assists in advocacy efforts.
• Interprets and explains complex certification
reports, proposals and related concepts in order to
identify objectives for both internal and external
audiences.
• Analyzes operations to evaluate program
performance and provide guidance on the development of
certifications and programs; determines program areas in
need of improvement and/or with potential for expense
reduction, communicates concisely, and effectively drives
policy change.
• Participates in the development, modification,
and implementation of the ASNT Strategic Plan; places
focus on value-added enhancements for the Society’s
certification and technical programs, coordinates the
revision and maintenance of ASNT’s current product line
while also expanding ASNT’s product base in underserved
domestic and international regions.
• Adeptly provides NDT background information and
conveys key messages to media with guidance from the
Executive Director and input from the Senior Manager of
Marketing Communications.
• Maintains familiarity with the competitive
environment regarding all matters related to NDT/NDE/NDI
certification and training in the international and
domestic arenas. Leads team efforts to monitor the
external landscape, implement policies, objectives, and
activities in effort to maximize return on investment and
increase productivity.
• Serves as liaison between ASNT and its internal
and external clients; ensures priority is continuously
placed on interests related to the Society.
• Manages a team of technical/certification
specialists in accordance with ASNT policies; organizes
technology department to foster respect, trust and
collaborative work while ensuring performance is
optimized by conducting annual performance reviews,
assigning roles and responsibilities, delegating tasks
and providing guidance and direction on learned
improvements.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials
science, or related field required; advanced degree a
plus.
• NDT background and/or understanding of trends as
well as passion for industry.
• Demonstrated understanding of the international
marketplace in relation to the NDT market.
• Working familiarity with and/or ability to
operate in line with organizations and regulatory bodies
that are responsible for constructing NDT codes.
• Understanding of domestic and international
NDT/NDE/NDI societies and organizations.
• Strong management and leadership abilities;
demonstrated exceptional decision making skills and
routine use of strategic guidance to manage people and
produce results.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
(written reports/analysis and oral presentations).
• Valid ASNT Level III certification desired, but
not required for this role.
