Non-Destructive Testing

The ambitious efforts to look into objects, to inspect materials and components in a way that further use is not limited or prevented and that their shape stays unchanged, in other word: non-destructively. This intention is as old as the ability of the human being to modify materials and to produce components.

It happened almost over 100 years ago, that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923) doscovered the X-rays, and with them the possibility to scan through materials and to make visible their inhomogeinities. The discovery of X-rays was the foundation of modern non-destructive materials testing (NDT). The increasing development of new NDT methods and related test equipment is excellently laid down in the publication "Chronik der Zerstörungsfreien Materialprüfung".

Today, NDT is one of the most important methods for quality control of manufacturing processes and during plant inspection with respect to safety. Comparable with medical diagnostics, NDT is looking for hidden defects in plant components and constructions not only during the production process but also during operation periods. Aim is the detection of these defects at a stage that unexpected failure in the function of the component is prevented.

Take-off of an aero plane, operation of high-speed trains, production of safe cars, construction of a bridge or operation of a complex plant are no longer possible without NDT.

In almost all industrial areas NDT was developed to an unrenounceable tool for quality and safety control.

Furthermore, NDT is an important tool for the reduction of production and operation costs. To prevent accidents which may lead to damages of human life and heavy materials and environmental destructions, different NDT methods are used such as: X-ray, ultrasonic testing, thermography, leak detection as well as optical, electrical and magnetic surface methods.

The German Society for Non-Destructive Testing

The German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP) was founded in 1933 in Berlin and is one of the oldest NDT societies of the world. The DGZfP establishes communication and exchange of information links between research and development institutions, users of NDT, manufacturers of NDT equipment and NDT service providers. The DGZfP distributes information on recent developments with respect to NDT equipment and methods.

DGZfP Training, Communication and Information Centre in Berlin-Adlershof

Huge companies as well as SME's, research institutes, universities and governmental agencies but also numerous single experts which are busy in the field of NDT, amount to approx. 1500 members of the DGZfP.

The overall objectives of the DGZfP are research, development, use of NDT test methods and information on these methods.

Since more than 70 years, training of testing personnel is one of the main tasks of the DGZfP which has now a long tradition and is performed with great conscious. Since 1956, more than 35,000 inspectors have been trained. The DGZfP offers a comprehensive training programme which is performed in its six regional training centres and several authorised training locations. This network makes the DGZfP to one of the largest training organisation for NDT personnel in Europe.

For developing solutions of specific testing problems and to support training schemes in the different NDT methods the DGZfP has established Technical Committees.

Practically oriented exchange of experience and technical education takes place at nineteen Regional GroupsàLINK which meet regularly and are open for each interested expert.

DGZfP's certification body for certifying NDT personnel (DPZ) was accredited according to EN 45013 in 1994 by the German accreditation body Trägergemeinschaft für Akkreditierung (TGA). Since then, the DPZ offers certificates according to EN 473 and ISO 9712. End of 1999 the accreditation of the German notifying body Zentralstelle der Länder für Sicherheitstechnik (ZLS) and notification as independent authorised body for the certification of personnel in the technical field of pressure equipment followed, which is regulated under the European Pressure Equipment directive 97/23/EC.

The DGZfP regularly organises conferences, workshops and seminars. The yearly highlight is the annual conference of the society with over 500 participants and many guests from other EU and non-EU countries.

The Information Centre of the DGZfP offers various online services via the DGZfP website such as searching for proceedings and publications in a bibliographic database of publication titles and abstracts set up by the German associations and publishing houses: DVS-Verlag, VDG, VDEh and DGZfP, searching for standards and technical guidelines in a DGZfP database of titles of technical regulationsàLINK (access restricted for members of the DGZfP only) at the information platform standardisation, searching for service providers among DGZfP members (companies, institutes and associations) in the DGZfP Online Buyer's Guide and the online shop of DGZfP's publications and guidelines.
