Ionix Launches High Temperature Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging Transducer
Posted:
Built on the award winning HotSense™ ultrasonic platform, and powered by the proprietary HPZ piezo-ceramic, Ionix is launching a new dual element thickness gauging transducer, HS582i, for use across a wide temperature range, operating up to +550 °C (1022 °F). The probe can be used to measure remaining wall thickness from 1 to 500 mm with compliant thickness gauges in-service assets to. The probe requires no duty cycling below 350 °C (662 °F) allowing corrosion surveys without shutdown or isolation, with faster inspection time and better data from easier and more accurate calibration at asset temperature.

Key features of the new product:

• Dual element thickness gauging transducer for use through -55 to +550 °C (-67 to +1022 °F) for in-service assets
• Measures remaining wall thickness from 1 to 500 mm with compliant thickness gauges on high-temperature assets, in-service, without shutdown or isolation
• Compatible with industry standard ultrasonic gauges and flaw detectors
• Range of accessories available, including port inspection wand and safety guards for the most extreme temperatures
• Compliant to EN 12668:2 and ASTM E1065 standards to meet existing asset integrity UT procedures
• Enhanced wear properties and temperature withstand extend product lifetime

Major Benefits:

The new probe offers a number of major benefits over existing industry products:
• Reduces inspection time with no duty cycling or cooling up to +350 °C (662 °F) maximising productivity and minimising down-time or outages with in-service inspection
• 2X increased wear resistance for the most extreme environments and applications including scanning and corrosion mapping
• Offers better data from easier and more accurate calibration at asset temperature
• Increases safety with reduced inspection time at asset
• Compatibility with standard equipment and procedures allows adoption with minimal switching costs and time
• Deployable in corrosion and erosion surveys in wide-ranging applications across refining, oil & gas, energy, nuclear, aerospace and process sectors.

Ionix’s Development Director, Tim Stevenson, is excited about the potential for the new product: "Since Ionix launched its HotSenseTM fixed point corrosion monitoring technology, the market has been pressing us to offer a complementary thickness gauging transducer. By enabling users to undertake corrosion maps and surveys hot, without needing to duty cycle or actively cool, they can better retain calibrations and get faster, quality data and make more informed asset integrity decisions without waiting for a shutdown. Although the transducer looks familiar and meets the standards our customers expect, what is inside is unique, and we see this as the first milestone in rolling this technology out to other in-service UT applications."

David Astles, Ionix CEO, said "The sensor has already been well received and adopted by third party gauge and scanner manufacturers around the world to offer users a seamless experience. The initial customer user base is growing fast across a range of applications, some of which we never anticipated. "

The HS582i, 5 MHz dual element transducer is on sale from the 7th May 2020.
