A new truly portable tool has joined the ranks of increasingly popular pipe crawlers. It is the Troglotrek sewer crawler, a standalone, battery-powered device, which stands out from the crowd due to its extremely lightweight structure and independence from an external power supply.
Troglotrek, equipped with 300 meters of durable, Kevlar-reinforced cable on an aluminum drum, is a good fit for pipes from 4" up to 12" in diameter. This compact system allows for one-man operation, for it is light enough for one person to lift and transport it to the jobsite, as well as run an inspection all alone. In addition, the system, unlike most other motorized crawlers, does not require a dedicated vehicle and can be carried around in a standard pick-up truck or SUV.
In part, Troglotrek owes its portability to the fact that it is completely battery operated. This, in turn, makes it possible to use a thinner inspection cable, since there is no need for an additional cable to transport power all the way down to the tractor. For increased durability, the body of the tractor is made out of 300 series stainless steel and brass. It is steerable and boasts four-wheel drive ability with a built-in inclinometer and an integrated pressure monitor. Additionally, the tractor possesses a 33Hz transmitter which permits to locate its position within the pipe with precision. The tractor comes with a choice of wheels of three sizes: 4", 6" and 8".
The control unit of the Troglotrek sewer crawler is integrated with the reel. It has a 5.6" color display with a keyboard, an SD card (MPEG4/JPEG) for file recording and an integrated footage meter. Both the control unit and the cable are IP67 waterproof.
The camera of the crawler system has a digital clarity CMOS ⅓ image sensor with 0.1 lux sensitivity, endless panning/tilting, both manual and autofocus and focal distance from 20mm to infinity. High-intensity LEDs provide sufficient light for inspections in any setting.
