Aboveground storage tanks are subject to regular inspections prescribed by the applicable codes such as API 653 and EMUUA 159. It is well known that the tank bottoms are typically inspected using Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) floor scanners such as the Floormap®X. These sensitive tools enable the detection of the smallest pits and flaws. When it comes to the tank roofs, the damage mechanisms are quite different. Roof plates are thinner and subject to generalized corrosion. Different inspection techniques are used on the roof, typically conventional ultrasonic testing (UT) or floor scanners. UT inspections are often only "spot checks" and provide a low Probability of Detection (PoD). Electromagnetic floor scanners on the other hand offer high productivity and coverage, but with limited ability to assess generalized corrosion, and their weight raises safety concerns for operators on corroded roof plates. Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) is now being considered to address this application as it combines high productivity with the required sensitivity to generalized corrosion in a lightweight package.
