What makes a garment flame resistant as opposed to flame retardant? Flame retardancy is determined by a material's inherent or treated ability to stop the spread of flames when ignited by a fire, whereas flame resistance is determined by a material's inherent or treated ability to resist ignition from a source and to self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed. Inherently flame resistant materials such as Nomex IIIA are used to make IFR clothing that does not lose its fire-resistant capability through launderings or normal wear. Treated flame resistant materials such as Indura are chemically treated with a flame retardant substance that provides protection against flames and fires; this durably flame retardant material is used to make DFR clothing with protection that can fade with wear and laundering.
