POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Facility Radiation Safety Officer (FRSO)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Branch Manager (Indirectly to Corporate Radiation Safety Officer (CRSO)
Manages: Assistant Facility Radiation Safety Officer
Other Requirements: Works a 40 hour week with occasional overtime required.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Manages day to day activities and record keeping for radiation safety efforts at the branch.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Conducts field audits to insure compliance with all regulatory, license and company procedural requirements pertaining to the possession (storage), transportation and use of industrial radiographic equipment.
• Assists with mentoring of branch personnel regarding radiation safety.
• Perform actions necessary to ensure the safety of Company employees and the safety of members of the public.
• Assure only devices specifically listed on the license(s) are possessed.
• Assure that industrial radiographic equipment is secured against theft or unauthorized removal at all times while in storage, during transportation and while in use.
• Maintain copies of all applicable required records on file, in an organized manner, available for inspection at the Branch office.
• Assure that all industrial radiographic equipment is transported in accordance with all applicable federal/state transportation regulations, local requirements, an applicable licensed procedures.
• Assure that all required transportation labels and marking are complete and legible and that the documentation required for each device is current complete.
• Provide assistance and information to the CRSO on all matters relating to radiation safety and the radiation safety program.
• Serve as a point of contact to all applicable regulatory and/or law enforcement agencies during incidents involving the loss, theft or destruction of licensed radioactive material, vehicular accidents, etc. and provide assistance to the CRSO during such events.
• Assure that all required maintenance, repairs, and leak testing of licensed radioactive material is conducted in accordance with the manufacturers specifications, regulatory requirements and company procedures.
• Verify that all applicable required postings and notices regarding the storage, transportation and use of industrial radiographic equipment are current and posted in a conspicuous location, and have been completed as applicable.
• Identify and report regulatory violations and/or items of non-compliance to the CRSO.
• Conduct a radiation safety inspection at a minimum of once every six months (USNRC jurisdiction minimum requirement) or other frequency as mandated by the regulatory agency for each "active" radiographer and assistant radiographer to assure compliance with pertinent regulations and written operating procedures.
• Document each inspection on the appropriate company form
• Take and document proper action to correct any deficiencies found during each unannounced inspection.
• Assure that all survey instruments under the license are:
o Calibrated, operable and
o Capable of detecting 2 mR/hr through 1 R/hr.
o Are calibrated at intervals not to exceed 6 months, or other intervals as mandated by regulatory agency, and after servicing (servicing does not include the replacement batteries).
o Insure calibration/service records of all survey instruments possessed under the license are maintained on file for a period of 3 years or other period of time as required by regulatory agency.
• Conduct a quarterly inventory to account for all sealed sources, devices and depleted uranium possessed under the license.
• Record inventory results on the appropriate company form and in accordance with Radiation Safety Procedure document 30.G.1 Rev. 8.
• Conduct leak testing of sealed sources at intervals not to exceed 6 months or as required by the SSD&R.
• Insure only authorized personnel obtain leak test samples (authorized personnel includes radiographers)
• Insure leak tests are:
o Recorded properly and all required data is completed.
o The sample is properly forwarded.
o The leak test is conducted within the required interval.
o The results are within allowable limits. (In the event that results are greater tehan regulatory limits, contact the CRSO)
• Insure that quarterly maintenance is performed on each inventoried device containing sealed sources and associated equipment in accordance with part 30.J.8 of the Radiation Safety Procedure.
• Report any incident requiring notification to the CRSO by telephone.
• Follow guidelines as set forth by the Radiation Safety Procedure document 30.G.1 Rev 8 regarding notification of incidents.
• Document and maintain local file for all:
o Source Replacements
o Pocket Dosimeter records
o Source tracking records
• Training personnel on transporting and shipping requirements for source transport
• Ensure that individuals preparing or performing any function associated with the shipment/transport of Hazardous materials has received training in accordance with all applicable federal/state regulations.
• Insure compliance with all regulations and approve all source shipments
• Return all personal dosimetry badges to supplier promptly after each month’s usage with the appropriate control dosimetry.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Five (5) years experience as an Industrial Radiographer
• Requires a current Industrial Radiographer’s state card
• Requires ability to be certified as a Radiographer per company requirements
• Must have completed a 40 Hour Radiation Safety program
• Ability to certify to Level III RT per company standards
• Ability to successfully complete a sanctioned Radiation Safety Officer course
