SUMMARY
Sets up and operates multi-axes computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine to mill surfaces of metallic and nonmetallic work pieces by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned.

Sets up CNC multi-axis operations. Enters commands into control panel to retrieve preprogrammed machine data from mainframe computer or disk. Inserts precision indicator in machine spindle, and depresses switches to jog spindle into contact with workpiece, synchronizes tape and tool, and records setup point. Retracts spindle and loads and secures first preset tool and holder. Starts machine and observes cutting operation.

Compares numerical data display with specifications on operations sheet. Debugs and proves out programs. Calculates proper feeds and speeds. Adjusts tool lengths and fixture offsets.

Assembles and presets tooling for next operation during automated cycle to reduce machine downtime.

Replaces milling tools with drilling and boring tools at specified change points to reduce or eliminate subsequent machining of workpiece on another machine. Monitors tooling usage for maximum cost effectiveness.

Operates machine on preliminary dry run before machining first part to detect errors in computer program. Completes First Article Inspection. Accurately modifies or documents jobs.

Successfully sets up and runs repeat jobs in the most efficient manner.

Responsible for the accuracy and quality of the part. Authorized to stop processes to ensure quality.

Authorized to direct machine operators in the operation of the equipment and sequence of the work.

Works overtime as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Excellent communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, routers and inspection procedures. Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to understand general G-code programming.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry or ability to use a trig book. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Provides own tools. Demonstrates mechanical aptitude. Operates basic measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, surface plate checks and optical comparators.
