The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is the technical expert on the Radiation Safety Team, and acts as the technical resource to the Field and Management on Safety matters around Industrial Radiography in the USA.

Major Responsibilities:

The RSO is responsible for assuring that all job sites and facilities that use radiation conform to the SI Radioactive Material Licenses, selected industry standards and applicable government regulations
The RSO is responsible to assure that radiation exposures to personnel are as low as reasonably possible
Review state and federal laws and SI Operations & Emergency Manual (O & E) to recommend modifications to enhance and ensure the compliance, safety, and efficiency of the SI Radiation Safety Program with SI Corporate RSO.
Responsible for ensuring company is in compliance with all regulatory rules / laws.
Perform and/or review investigations of overexposures, accidents, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, misuses or other deviations from approved radiation safety practice and implement corrective actions when necessary
Respond to radiation safety emergencies and prepare and submit reports to the appropriate governing bodies
Responsible for State / U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) License applications, renewals, and notifications including Isotope and X-ray tubes unless covered by other entities.
Directly responsible to NRC and States for License, any items of non-compliance and corrective action
Responsible for employee radiation safety equipment maintenance, inventory, and calibrations
Responsible for employee dose reporting from dosimeter readings and film badges
Responsible for isotope & isotope equipment inventory, quality checks and compliance with regulatory bodies
Perform radiation safety audits and recommend improvements at each service location within the SI/SPI network
Standardize and automate various program aspects in conjunction with Corporate RSO.
Improve and advance the overall culture of the Radiation Safety Program
Responsible to ensure that employees are trained, carded, and background checked
Responsible for source storage facilities and access rights to devices
Responsible for tracking, alarming and locating Isotopes in the Field
Assist other company Radiation Safety Officers
Responsible for ensuring field and regional offices are in compliance with all regulations and license requirements

Education/Training Required:

High School Diploma or Equivalent
Radiation Safety Course and Safety Officer Training
Emergency Source Retrieval Course
Administrative Course for Regulatory Compliance and Management of Company Radiography Compliance Programs
Isotope Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Training
FAA / Shipping Training
State or IRRSP Gamma / X-ray use card
Hazardous Transportation card
Valid Driver’s License and Clean Record
Pass Background checks for DOT, NRC, Homeland Security

Skills & Knowledge Required:

Keen understanding of radiation use with NDT method of Industrial radiography.
Must have formal training in the establishment and maintenance of a radiation protection program. Refresher courses to stay up to date with new rules and laws will be required
Must possess experience in the establishment and maintenance of a radiation protection program
Ability to travel up to 15% of the time doing field audits, source changes and incident investigations
Microsoft Office skills
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Radiation Safety within Industrial Radiography for the NDT Industry
