Responsible for testing and evaluating the efficiency, characteristics and performance of railroad components and materials in accordance with applicable guidelines, specifications, standards and customer contract requirements.

Assists in the preparation and inspection of metallurgical samples. Requires sample cutting, grinding, polishing, and etching. NDE of materials is required using, as a minimum, visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic test methods.

Responsibility also includes maintenance of equipment and supplies. Some of the aspects expected to complete will be:
1) Understanding and using NDT equipment
2) Perform rail flaw inspections
3) Design test plans
4) Generating inspection reports
5) Operate metallurgy lab equipment.

Position requires analytical, documentation
and reporting skills.

Skills:
Associate’s degree, or one year of education and experience including formal training and experience in nondestructive and/or materials testing.

Should hold NDT level I certification in VT, LPT, MPT, or UT.

Knowledge of materials and their characteristics.

Knowledge and experience in the efficient and safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in performing metallurgical and nondestructive evaluations. must

Must demonstrate computer operation efficiency and be familiar with PC based operating systems (Word, Excel, Power Point, ACAD). Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are a must.

Candidate must possess the ability and willingness to work cooperatively with internal and external customers and management.

Physical Demands: This job requires walking, standing, bending, and sitting, ability to lift 30 – 50 lbs. and work in various weather conditions. Travel to field locations to coordinate testing activities may be involved.

Candidates should be able to understand rail testing and able to operate hi-rail vehicle.

Prefer formal classroom training and field experience in NDE, with emphasis on visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic methods.

Knowledge and experience in phased array ultrasonic.
Individual possess formal training and experience in NDE and materials testing sufficient for NDE Level II
certification.

Must be efficient in the use of metallurgical laboratory equipment.
