MISTRAS New Kensington, PA facility is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Technical Assistant – Ultrasonic Testing (UT Equipment) to support all functional areas of data entry, filing, and assisting with special projects as necessary.
Job Summary
We are seeking a technically skilled Technical Assistant for the Greater Pittsburgh area’ to support the troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of Ultrasonic Testing (UT) equipment used in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). The role requires hands-on diagnostic ability, strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, and the capability to identify faults independently, even when drawings or documentation are not available.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:
Troubleshoot and repair Ultrasonic Testing (UT) equipment, accessories, and associated systems
Diagnose electrical, electronic, and mechanical faults using systematic troubleshooting methods
Perform preventive maintenance, functional testing, and calibration checks on UT instruments
Support configuration, setup, and performance verification of UT systems before field deployment
Maintain accurate records of faults, repairs, and maintenance activities
Liaise with vendors or OEMs for advanced technical support when required
Ensure equipment is maintained in compliance with company procedures and applicable standards
Maintain a safe, organized workshop and proper handling of sensitive equipment
Required Technical Skills & Competencies
Proficient in the use of multimeters for voltage, current, resistance, and continuity testing
Skilled in using hand tools and specialty wiring tools (crimpers, strippers, soldering tools, etc.)
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings
Strong fault-finding skills, including the ability to troubleshoot equipment without drawings or manuals
Understanding of basic electronics, power supplies, signal paths, and connectors
Ability to identify and resolve cable, probe, connector, and internal component issues
Qualifications
Technical diploma, trade certification, or vocational training in Electronics, Electrical Technology, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or a related hands-on field
Must have Valid Driver's License with clean driving record
Practical, hands-on training is strongly preferred over purely academic qualifications
Proven ability to work with tools, instruments, and equipment in a workshop or field environment
Comfortable performing physical, detail-oriented technical work for extended periods
Willingness to work in a non-desk, hands-on role involving troubleshooting, repairs, and equipment maintenance
Note: This position is hands-on and workshop based. Candidates seeking primarily desk-based or design roles may not be suited for this position.
Preferred Experience
Hands-on experience working in a mechanical workshop or electronics repair environment
Strong PC skills, including hardware installation, diagnostics, and configuration
Ability to disassemble and reassemble a personal computer (PC) confidently
Experience handling cables, connectors, power supplies, and internal electronic components
Familiarity with troubleshooting electronic assemblies at component or module level
Work Environment
Primarily workshop-based with occasional site support and travel
Industrial environment requiring strict adherence to safety procedures
