We are seeking a Laboratory Support Technologist to support radiography activities and radiation effects experiments. These activities would involve the operational oversight, maintenance and use of Sandia/CA’s radiography capabilities – including x-ray computed tomography systems, radiographic imaging, thermography, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy – to answer key questions from our scientific and engineering mission activities. This position would also entail the planning and execution of experiments to assess radiation effects on materials and components.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
• Use radiography capabilities to image and analyze materials, test devices and hardware important to our scientific and national defense missions
• Plan, set up and run experiments to explore the effects of ionizing radiation on materials and component functionality
• Design, assemble and test mechanical and electrical devices that support scientific experiments
• Develop instrumentation, electronics, and software controls
• Maintain and upgrade experimental equipment, develop operational procedures, perform experiments, analyze results, and prepare documentation on test results and conclusions
• Develop safety documentation and maintain a safe working environment
• Work with people outside the department, such as machine shop staff and external vendors
Your work will consist of providing laboratory support for focused, full-time projects of limited duration or multiple concurrent projects that compose the candidate’s full schedule. You will be able to accommodate either type of workload. You also need to have good oral and written communication skills and to work both independently as well as with a team.
Qualifications We Require
• Associate's degree in a STEM field (e.g., mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, physics) OR equivalent combination of education or experience
• Experience with laboratory operations
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance or equivalent clearance from another federal agency
Qualifications We Desire
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field
• Experience with imaging technologies, including optical and electron microscopy
• Experience with data acquisition systems and/or computer control systems
• Ability to demonstrate independence and resourcefulness
• Strong skills at problem-solving
• Strong computer skills and experience with data analysis
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
About Our Team
We are the Nuclear Deterrent Materials and Radiation Effects team! We provide expertise in materials and radiation sciences to support Sandia’s missions in nuclear deterrence, proliferation detection and energy. We steward radiography capabilities and exercise them to image and analyze the structure of materials and components. We develop and characterize organic and inorganic materials used as scintillators in radiation detection technologies. We perform detailed modeling, simulation, and experiments to characterize and analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on materials and components used in our engineered systems. All of this is accomplished by bringing to bear our advanced capabilities and the team’s expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, computation, and engineering.
