Visual Testing (VT): Complete Guide for Beginners (2026) | NDT Quality Hub
INDIA
Visual Testing (VT), also known as Visual Inspection, is the oldest, simplest, and most widely used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method. Before using advanced techniques like Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), or Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), inspectors always begin with a careful visual examination.
Visual Testing involves inspecting a component using the human eye or optical devices to identify visible defects without damaging the material. Although it appears simple, VT plays a critical role in quality assurance because many defects can be detected early, reducing repair costs and preventing failures.
In industries such as oil and gas, power plants, aerospace, construction, automotive, and manufacturing, Visual Testing is often the first and mandatory inspection method before any other NDT technique is performed.
