After 40 years of NDT and weld inspection, Ultramag has expanded into three
units in Southampton and one in Ferndown. Plans are for a new two-storey
facility, which will cater for the continued growth in NDT, welding procedure
qualification, welding consultancy, welder training, pressure testing and
mechanical testing. This move will free up one unit, which will become a
dedicated training centre for NDT, weld inspection, welding standards, health &
safety and quality-related courses.

Once the new facility is up and running, a second radiographic enclosure will be
built alongside the existing facility. This will help with the radiographic work,
where the one bay is running for at least 16 hours every day. The second
enclosure will also be used for the testing of castings and smaller components as
the company heads into CRT.

Since starting in 1974, Ultramag has gained ISO 9001, Nadcap and now UKAS
accreditation and remains an independently-owned inspection company.
Ultramag provides inspection and testing services to a broad range of industries,
including construction, marine, aerospace, defence, pressure pipework, material
stockists, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, power generation and renewable energy.

To meet the demand for the CE marking regulations and RWC roles, the Weld
Inspection department has taken on two more welding inspectors to work with
the current IIW welding technologist and welding specialists. They will assist in
welder training and welder tests and will also help to run the mechanical testing
facility next year.

Managing Director Chris Simmonds said: "We are looking forward to 2015, when
we can move into our new building and redevelop our other sites. We anticipate a
very busy year with an increase in welding procedures under PED, as a Notified
Body, our new mechanical testing facility and the expansion of the training
centre."

About Ultramag

Ultramag provide specialist non destructive testing services, welding co-
ordination as an independent inspection body and mechanical testing services
which include hardness, dimensional and acid etch, pressure testing, and alloy
verification. Nearly all mechanical tests are carried out by ourselves but some
other forms of mechanical testing will have to be submitted to a UKAS laboratory
for an independent analysis. Almost all of our equipment is portable so we are
able to offer an in- house or mobile service.

Ultramag is a member of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and
Service Inspection Group. Approvals are held from Lloyd’s Register, Bureau
Veritas, DNV-GL and the American Bureau of Shipping. Inspectors hold
qualifications for PCN, SNT, ACCP, CSWIP, NAS 410 and EN 4179 with Level 3
personnel who ensure the smooth running of the facilities.
