The Italian National Research Council’s (CNR) Institute of Crystallography of CNR (Bari, Italy) and the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA, Rome, Italy) aim to show the versatility of X-ray computed tomography (CT) to inspect the internal structure of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in monolithic and sandwich laminate configurations widely used in aerospace structures.

Certification of such composites typically involves the use of destructive testing methods, such as acid digestion, to determine porosity. With this research, the institutes seek to demonstrate that all types of composite structural elements can be inspected nondestructively using X-ray CT, permitting investigation of the volume distribution of the pores/voids in the analyzed sample and providing — after a post-analysis data processing and 3D sample reconstruction — an interactive 3D exploration and quantitative analysis of porosity via the complete 3D volume rendering of the analyzed composites.
