Redesigned TROGLOTREK Cable Drum Improves Control of Long-Range Pipe Inspection Data

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 20, 2026 — FIBERSCOPE has updated the cable drum frame used with the TROGLOTREK robotic pipe crawler, integrating long-range tether management, crawler control, and inspection data display into a portable field assembly.
In remote visual inspection, cable length is just one part of system performance. Inspectors also need to know where each observation happened, keep control of the crawler, and save usable footage for condition assessment.
The TROGLOTREK drum supports this workflow with 984 feet (300 meters) of 4.0-mm tether and a built-in footage counter that shows distance on the operator display. Inclinometer and internal pressure sensor data are also available through the control interface, integrated control and recording.
The drum frame supports a machined-metal IP67 control unit with a 5.6-inch high-brightness LCD and integrated keyboard. Operators can steer and drive the crawler, enter text, and monitor inspection data from a single interface.
Video is saved to an SD card in MPEG-4 format, and still images are stored as JPEG files. The recording resolution is 640 by 480, and the system automatically supports PAL or NTSC video. An optional Wi-Fi module is also available.
The control software integrates with WinCan, so recorded inspection data can be incorporated into standard sewer-condition reporting processes. However, compatibility alone does not ensure PACP-compliance. Compliance still depends on operator certification, inspection procedures, equipment setup, project requirements, and cable construction for retrieval duty.
The two-core twisted-pair tether incorporates Vectran as a strength member and Kevlar reinforcement. Its specified minimum breaking strength is 2.5 kN, and the wet-end termination is stainless steel. Cable mass is specified at 19 kilograms per kilometre.
The drum is available with manual or fully motorized payout and retrieval. Manual operation may be best for occasional inspections or when simplicity is important. Motorized operation can reduce repetitive handling during frequent or long-distance use. The reel uses a tubular-steel frame and solid aluminum housings. Its stated storage range is minus 20 C to 85 C, while its operating range is 0 C to 50 C.
Before deployment, inspection teams should follow three steps: check the footage-counter calibration, match the drum setup to the expected cable handling, and ensure the recording settings meet the owner’s requirements.
