CYCLOPS TZ Adds Laser Distance Reference to Remote Mainline Visual Inspection

With the updated manhole zoom camera, inspectors can now match Full HD images with accurate distance measurements during surface-level sewer and drainage checks.
FIBERSCOPE has supplied the CYCLOPS TZ manhole zoom camera with a preinstalled laser rangefinder, adding noncontact target-distance information to its remote visual inspection capabilities.
In sewer inspections, both clear images and precise location information matter. Optical zoom helps spot possible problems, but zooming in does not show how far away something is. The built-in rangefinder lets crews measure distance, making it easier to identify issues and plan next steps.
The CYCLOPS TZ uses a Full HD 1,920-by-1,080 progressive-scan CMOS sensor and 30x optical zoom. Unlike digital zoom, optical zoom preserves the sensor’s available image detail while narrowing the field of view. Manual and automatic focus modes help operators manage changing focal distances inside large-diameter pipelines.
The mechanized head tilts 60 degrees upward and 30 degrees downward. Illumination is provided by two 10-watt primary LEDs and six white LEDs surrounding the camera sensor. The system is intended for 4- to 80-inch pipes and is rated for viewing distances up to 196 feet (60 meters), subject to line of sight, atmospheric conditions, water level, and pipe condition.
A 25-foot carbon-fibre pole positions the camera through manholes, shafts, and other access points. Video is transmitted via a rechargeable Wi-Fi module to a tablet, which enables remote head control, recording, still-image capture, text entry, and camera status monitoring.
The laser rangefinder helps crews locate a problem, but it is not meant to replace detailed measurements or engineering inspections. Its main job is to help with quick checks, like spotting areas that need cleaning, confirming blockages, or picking which pipes need a closer look with a crawler.
This workflow also supports exposure reduction. OSHA identifies manholes and pipelines among sewer-system components that may qualify as confined spaces and require formal hazard evaluation before entry. Surface-operated imaging can reduce unnecessary entry, although it does not replace site-specific safety procedures.
Fiberscope suggests three best practices for inspections: start by recording a wide view before zooming in, measure distances from a steady camera position, and double-check important findings using the inspection method required by the asset owner.
