FIBERSCOPE has introduced an optional tripod meter counter for STRAHL well camera systems, including the STRAHL HDL deep borehole camera. This accessory is designed for remote visual inspections where precise cable control and consistent depth referencing are critical as the camera descends further below the wellhead.
A borehole camera documents corrosion, sediment, mineral accumulation, casing joints, obstructions, and changes in the borehole wall. However, image quality alone does not provide a reliable location reference. Inspection records must link observations to the deployed cable length and specify the measurement starting point.
In deep wells, the cable may extend over the opening for hundreds of feet as the operator monitors images, controls the winch, and records findings. Angled entry, rim contact, or uneven feeding complicate deployment and create uncertainty if technicians do not use a consistent starting reference.
The optional tripod establishes a defined cable-guiding point above the opening. Its meter counter tracks cable length, letting operators associate recorded images or video with a consistent deployment reference. The tripod additionally ensures straighter cable entry and reduces unnecessary contact with the casing edge.
"On deep wells, the hardest part is often not seeing the problem, but documenting exactly where it is," said Terry, Sales Specialist at FIBERSCOPE. "The tripod meter counter gives contractors a steady reference point at the wellhead so the depth on the report matches what was observed on screen."
The accessory does not replace the STRAHL HDL motorized winch or its on-screen depth display. The winch manages cable deployment and retrieval, while the tripod controls the cable path and counting point at the wellhead. It does not measure defect dimensions, establish surveyed elevations, or determine defect severity. Interpretation remains the responsibility of the qualified inspector or other appropriate professional. Operators should define zero, check the counter, and record any offset between the tripod counting point and the top of the casing or the project datum. Important observations should be supported by an image or video segment, an inspection direction note, and a depth note.
The tripod is most useful for deep inspections, sites where the winch cannot be positioned directly over the casing, and projects demanding repeated observations at specific depths. For shallow, unobstructed wells, hand guidance along with the winch alone may be more efficient.
