Battery-powered municipal CCTV platform inspects 6- to 80-inch pipelines with 10× optical zoom, electric camera lift, and built-in groundwater inflow detection.

FIBERSCOPE is expanding portable CCTV inspection options for municipalities, wastewater contractors and infrastructure teams with the STORMER X Municipal Grade Pipe Crawler, a modular pipeline inspection system designed for sewer mains, storm drains, culverts and industrial pipelines from 6 to 80 inches (DN150–2000).

Traditional truck-based CCTV systems remain an effective solution for high-volume municipal inspection. The challenge emerges when the inspection point is located outside practical truck access — in a backyard easement, ditch, parking structure, plant floor, or other restricted location.

STORMER X separates municipal-grade crawler capability from the requirement to position a dedicated CCTV truck directly beside the access point.

The crawler, motorized reel, and rugged control tablet form a wheeled portable system that crews can move to the manhole or inspection location. The platform can operate from two configured commercial tool batteries, including interfaces for major brands such as DeWalt or Milwaukee, or from 110–240 V AC once integrated into a vehicle.

Designed for Large-Pipe Condition Assessment

STORMER X combines a steerable crawler with an electric camera elevator and a Full HD pan-and-tilt camera.

The camera provides 10× optical zoom and 12× digital zoom, letting operators to center the camera in larger pipes and examine joints, cracks, and other conditions without relying exclusively on digital magnification.

Key capabilities include:

* Inspection range from 6 to 80 inches
* Full HD 1920 × 1080 pan-and-tilt camera
* 10× optical and 12× digital zoom
* Electric camera lift
* Rear-view camera
* Inclination measurement and automatic anti-tipping
* Motorized cable reel with automatic cable straightening
* 656 ft cable with the Base Set
* 984 ft cable with the Advanced Set
* Working lengths up to 1,650 ft available by configuration

Groundwater Inflow Detection for I&I Investigations

A distinguishing feature of STORMER X is its built-in groundwater inflow sensor, which is included with both the Base and Advanced systems.

As the crawler moves through the pipeline, the system can record groundwater entering the pipe and plot the readings against inspection distance.

For inflow and infiltration studies, this adds a further layer of information to conventional CCTV video by helping inspection teams associate groundwater entry with specific joints or pipe sections.

The inspection software also supports defect coding, inclination plotting, reporting, and GIS-compatible data export.

Measurement for Rehabilitation Planning

For projects requiring dimensional information, the STORMER X Advanced Set adds laser measurement tools for pipe diameter, ovality, crack width, and object width.

This configuration is intended for applications such as rehabilitation design, contractor inspection, pre-lining assessment, and post-rehabilitation verification, where video alone may not provide sufficient information for the final report.

One Platform That Can Expand Into Laterals

STORMER X can also be configured with an optional lateral-launch module.

The add-on is designed for 8- to 48-inch mains and 4- to 12-inch laterals, allowing utilities and inspection contractors to expand the same platform beyond mainline CCTV inspection.

"The goal is not to replace every CCTV truck," FIBERSCOPE said. "The goal is to give inspection crews municipal-grade crawler capability when access, terrain or the economics of deploying a dedicated vehicle make a more portable system the better fit."

STORMER X is manufactured in the European Union by Zikmund Electronics and configured, sold and supported for North American customers by FIBERSCOPE.
