Eddy Current Testing: In eddy current testing, one of the things I learned how to use is the probe, and how the alternating current flows through a wire coil and generates an oscillating magnetic field. If the probe and its magnetic field are brought close to a conductive material like a metal test piece, a circular flow of electrons known as an eddy current will begin to move through the metal very easily.

Magnetic Particle Testing: In magnetic particle, one of the procedure steps I learned was to apply the dry magnetic powders in such a manner that a light, uniform, dust like coating settles on the surface of the area under inspection. The excess powder may be gently blown across the surface to aid interpretation and increase exposure of magnetic particles to any flux leakage that is present.

Radiography Testing: For manual film processing, in radiography, the most essential things to have is a floating thermometer, a timer and the time-temperature chart. With my experience with developing, rinsing, fixing, washing, and drying procedures, I have learned that exposed radiographs that contain a latent image should be processed as soon as possible as they are more sensitive to energy. Film packets are only to be opened in the dark room or under safe-light conditions.

Visual and Liquid Penetrant Testing: For visual and liquid penetrant testing, I’ve learned that penetrant materials come in two basic types, which is fluorescent and visible penetrants. Fluorescent penetrant systems are more sensitive than visible penetrant systems because the eye is drawn to the glow of the fluorescing indication. However, visible penetrants do not require a darkened area and an ultraviolet light in order to make an inspection. Penetrants are then classified by the method used to remove the excess penetrant from the part. The four methods are: Method A-Water Washable, Method B- Post-Emulsifiable, Lipophilic, Method C-Solvent Removable, and Method D- Post-Emulsifiable, Hydrophilic.
